Community Re-Entry

Our name says it all. Those of us at Safer Communities Ministry (SCM) understand that it takes concerned citizens and active participants from all sectors of a community – government and agencies, business, community and faith-based non-profits, churches, and individuals – all working together to fight crime and recidivism.   The ideal is for the total community to work with all the life areas of the total person.

While SCM is a faith-based initiative, it has introduced toolbox approach of proven services, strategies and programs that open the door for any individual to have a part in making their neighborhood safer, changing lives, and protecting taxpayer resources. Other counties that desire safer communities may use any or all of these ideas can contact SCM for assistance in getting started.

Addressing Issues of Personal Character

Those with a passion for introducing inmates to truths that will change the way they see themselves, their relationships, and personal responsibilities are encourage to explore volunteering in the Life Skills Program.

In this intense 7-week program, inmates receive Bible-based instruction to begin their transformation from the inside – out. Community volunteers also lead support groups that offer ex-offenders personal and spiritual support.

Ex-Offender Accountability

The SCM Total Care and Support (TC&S) Program is a way for both participants and community volunteers to interact with caring community agencies, professionals, businesses, etc. to help participants reach their goals. These goals are identified and established during an initial assessment. The progress of TC&S participants is tracked and recorded in a database. Next steps are clearly identified so participants can move toward goals with the support they need.

Starting a New Life

Without assistance, ex-offenders fight an uphill battle in obtaining housing and employment. The Second Chance Re-Entry Network (SCREEN) is a community-wide program initiated and administered by SCM. SCREEN staff and partner clients meet with ex-offenders on a regular basis to pursue job readiness and placement. Community volunteers are also involved in helping ex-offenders secure housing, whether at a halfway house, other transitional housing option, or in the community.

A graphical representation of the combined TC&S/SCREEN initiatives conveys the complexity of achieving successful re-entry into society for the typical "Joe Ex-offender".
